Rachel and Paulo come to this nostalgic, secluded drive-in twice: first for passionate intimacy on their first date, and later for a bittersweet confession. The change in what they do there parallels the evolution of their complicated relationship.

Appearance

It’s your classic drive-in setup: a large movie screen, a projection booth, and ample parking for cars to cozy up for a flick.

The theater is notably empty during weeknights,[1] giving visitors some privacy—something Rachel seems well aware of and puts to strategic use. The theater keeps regular business hours and shows classic films, though it remains closed on Monday evenings.[2]

Key events

  • First Date Intimacy: In Back and Forth, Rachel takes Paulo to the deserted drive-in to watch “Casablanca” for their first official date. The movie night starts innocently, but Rachel quickly orchestrates a move to the back seat, where they have their first sexual encounter. The empty theater gives them both privacy and ambiance for the occasion, though Rachel later playfully teases Paulo about his performance.[3]
  • Driving Lessons and Heart-to-Heart: The theater makes its second and final appearance in Small Fry when Rachel brings Paulo to the closed Monday night venue to practice driving. They start in the empty parking lot, then retreat to the back seat to talk. There, Rachel vulnerably admits she’s falling in love with Paulo, while he painfully confesses his inability to reciprocate fully due to his lingering feelings for Lucy. Even so, the visit ends with them finding comfort in each other’s arms.[4]
