David’s house is a small two-storey home where David lives with David’s mom, within walking distance of Roseville Middle School.[1] She is the only family the comic ever shows him with, and nearly every scene set here involves food of some kind.
Description
The first exterior view shows the house at dawn against hills and pine trees, with a rooster perched on the roof.[1] The front door is plain and flat, with a working doorbell and a threshold deep enough for three visitors to crowd into at once.[2]
Inside, David’s bedroom is upstairs, with a single bed pushed right up against a curtained window that looks out over the roof slope and the hills beyond. A staircase runs straight down to the kitchen, where a counter and stove stand in front of a hallway doorway.[1] A proper dining room is never shown, though David’s mom carries out a platter of food.[2]
History
The house debuts in Onwards to Adventure, on the morning of David’s birthday. A rooster on the roof crows him awake through the window, and he gleefully runs downstairs to fix himself “breakfast in bed”, frying the eggs shells and all. His mom passes through the kitchen on her way out to work, tells him to get to school on time, and promises a big dinner that evening. The front door clicks shut on his protest that a birthday deserves a day off.[1]
He comes home that evening thoroughly crushed, his attempt to rescue the Flower girl having ended in police involvement and a restraining order. His mom consoles him in the entryway and lets him know he’ll need to say sorry when they visit the hospital, adding “After the restraining order expires.” Then Mike, Lucy and Paulo arrive at the door to check on him, and Lucy reveals the flower girl only transferred schools. A delighted David bellows the dinner invitation directly into Mike’s ear. The birthday feast is a platter of hot dogs with a lit sparkler stuck in one, and everybody stays.[2]
David next takes Paulo’s phone call about Tess’s Silvershore Islands invitation from home in Invitation, gushing about beaches and bikinis while Paulo winces on the other end.[4]
On the day Lucy left Roseville in Leaving Home, one panel of Mike’s montage of everyone coping in their own way shows David at home, staring at a pink-frosted cake while his mom rests a hand on his head.[5]
In the side story Everyday Life, David’s mom serves him what he calls “an AMAZING breakfast” in bed, and he sprints off to school with toast in his mouth.[6]
Trivia
- The rooster crows “Ki kiri kiriiiiiiii~!”, the Spanish onomatopoeia for cock-a-doodle-doo. Veronica’s commentary explains she always thought the Spanish version was better.[1]
- The house’s establishing page also dates David’s birthday: the opening caption reads “February 22nd”.[1]
