Roseville High School is the public high school the main cast attends, and the comic's default setting from Enter High School onward. Mike names it on the very first morning ("So this is it.. Roseville High School.."), and nearly every school-year chapter since has played out somewhere in its halls, cafeteria or grounds.[1]

Description

The school is within walking distance of the cast's homes, a short walk past a playground.[2] It is a boxy, multi-story building with a large analog clock set above the entrance and wide grids of windows along its wings.[1] Pine trees stand around the grounds, and the paved forecourt in front of the steps fills up with students each morning.[3] David, comparing it to Roseville Middle School, is not exactly dazzled on arrival: "Looks like the last one."[1]

The comic has shown a fair amount of the inside over the years. Homerooms mix grade levels, which is how the freshman gang winds up sharing room 103 with junior Tess.[4] There is a cafeteria with a nice big table for the group,[5] a gymnasium hung with blue pennant banners,[6] and an auditorium with a backstage and dressing rooms.[7] There is also a computer lab,[8] along with a swimming pool that was brand new during the cast's freshman year.[9] Outdoors there is a running track with bleachers,[10] plus a grassy hill where students go when they would rather not be around everyone else.[11]

History

The gang arrives for their first day of freshman year in Enter High School, where Mr. Noodles welcomes them and promises a smooth ride to anyone diligent and responsible.[12] The whole group lands in homeroom 103 together,[4] and by lunch they have claimed a big cafeteria table, where Tess joins them. That table stays the group's home base for the rest of the comic.[5]

The rest of freshman year settles into a rhythm of gym-class disasters and hallway drama. Mike spends one class buried under dodgeballs thrown by classmates who still consider him a "cheater",[13] and Abbey makes his debut pulling Daisy up off the gym floor.[14] The new pool causes plenty of trouble of its own, with Lucy excused to Room 104 over her fear of water[15] and Daisy having an accident during a swimming lesson.[16] Noah corners Tess in a hallway during Under Pressure, and it is Abbey who knocks him down.[17] The year winds up with the spring pep rally in A Different Side. Lucy's singing stuns the whole school silent,[18] Daisy falls from the cheer pyramid,[19] and Tess is booed and hit with a can on stage.[20]

"So this is my final year," Tess notes on the first morning of the next one, alone at the table with an SAT prep book.[3] The auditorium earns its keep that year. Sue hauls Lucy straight out of detention to audition for her play,[21] and the show eventually goes up on the school stage, complete with a showstopping song from Lucy.[22] The student-council race in Feline Filibuster runs through the computer lab, the cafeteria and an auditorium debate, and it ends with Daisy winning the secretary seat only to hand it straight to Abbey.[8] Pillow Talk brings something far uglier to the grounds. Out by the track, Craig responds to a note from Jessica by groping and coercing her.[10]

Lucy's time at the school ends without warning. One morning, Miss Amalu stands in front of homeroom and tells the class that Lucy will no longer be attending.[23] Tess is the first of the group to finish for good, walking through a door marked "CLASS OF 2008 ONLY" to graduate in Class of 2008.[24] Later, Mike takes to standing alone in front of the building in the mornings,[25] and he starts eating lunch by himself too, which is how Table for One gets its name.

Lucy walks back into her old homeroom in Love Again, now wearing a private-school uniform.[26] Lunch that day turns ugly. Paulo chokes Mike with his own scarf,[27] and Abbey breaks up with Daisy right at the table.[28] The day ends more gently out on the grounds, where Lucy and Augustus reunite in tears among the autumn leaves.[29]

That winter, Augustus leaves a note in Mike's locker summoning him to the snow-covered bleachers, and Mike breaks down there, sobbing out his guilt over Lucy.[30] The same bleachers host a much warmer scene in Track Meet. Mike suits up for the Hornets in the gymnasium ("And I guess.. that's how I became.. a jock."),[6] and afterwards Daisy and Paulo sit out there trading confessions. She admits she likes girls, and he admits he likes boys right back.[31]

The current chapters keep the school as their daily backdrop, and it has not been an easy stretch. Lucy's school days have been growing darker since her return, and she recently broke down in the middle of the cafeteria.[32]

Trivia

  • The school's sports teams are the Hornets. The uniform is a blue jersey with a grinning, flexing hornet on the front.[6]
  • Veronica has explained that the student body is all cats and dogs (with the odd snake) simply because she finds cats and dogs easy to draw. The mice, giraffes and elephants of her pre-BCB comics were dropped over size-difference problems.[33]
  • The authors' character Q&A blog, along with its Kickstarter companion book Ask Roseville High, takes its name from the school.
  • According to Veronica, James originally attended a private school specifically so that Paulo's crush on him could stay hidden. She later transferred him to Roseville High to open up the track-team cast.[34]
