Kevin is a cat living in Roseville with his wife Janet, who is a dog, and the two of them are the adoptive parents of Abbey and Molly. He tends to turn up on his way in from work or behind the wheel of the family car, and he is happy to let Janet do most of the talking. His first name alone was enough to make Paulo suspect that Abbey’s family did not add up the usual way.
Personality
Kevin turns up, says hello, and keeps out of the way. He comes home loosening his tie, waits outside the school in his car, and sits with a laptop while his daughter critiques his colour choices. He is pleasant to the friends Abbey brings home, keeps his sentences short, and chips in with a tease or a mild wince rather than a speech.
Kevin does a lot for the family from behind the wheel. He drove Abbey and Molly to Roseville when they first came to live with him,[1] and he handles the school pick-up.[2] On New Year’s Eve he volunteers to drive Abbey over to his friends before the family’s own small celebration.[3] Kevin’s playful side comes out around his family, whether he is betting Molly cannot stay awake until midnight[3] or bopping Janet on the shoulder over her “smellyface” joke.[4]
Appearance
Kevin is an adult male cat. On his debut he arrives home wearing a tie, loosening it as he comes in and announcing that he is about to head upstairs and change.[5] Veronica’s commentary admits that he kept giving her Lackadaisy vibes when she first designed him, which she insists was never the intention, and that he is “just a weird cat”.[5]
Significant events
Kevin’s earliest scenes are flashbacks in At Loose Ends. He drives the car that brings a very young Abbey and Molly to Roseville, and both he and Janet fall silent when Molly asks whether Mommy and Daddy are coming too.[1] Not long after, a playful moment between the couple sets Molly screaming and leaves both new parents stunned.[4] Later, waiting in his car after school, he notices Molly is running late and sends Abbey off to look for her, which is how Abbey stumbles onto his sister being bullied.[2]
In the present day, Kevin first appears in Rising Temperature, when Abbey brings Paulo and Mike home. He greets Abbey, says hello to the boys, and calls up to Janet that their son has brought friends over.[5] Paulo cannot make sense of a father called Kevin who is married to a dog until Mike loses his patience and spells out that Abbey is adopted.[5] Janet fills in the rest, explaining that the two of them really wanted a family and that Abbey has lived with them for about four years.[6] Come junior year, he is left in charge of Molly while Janet drives Abbey to the cemetery.[7] On New Year’s Eve, in Ten Seconds to Midnight, he promises Abbey a lift to his friends before dinner as the snow falls.[3]

Abbey
Abbey’s exchanges with Kevin stay polite and fairly formal. He has greeted him with a “Hi, Kevin” since he was small,[2] and still does as a teenager.[5] Kevin answers by name and with small favours, like an offer to carry his book bag upstairs[5] or a question about his day at school.[2] The heart-to-hearts go to Janet, not to him.[8] Even so, after visiting his mother’s grave in At Loose Ends, Abbey tells Janet that she and Kevin have given the two children a “normal life”, which is exactly what Charlotte wanted for them.[8]
Janet
Janet runs the household and Kevin cheerfully follows her lead. She shouts the instructions and he answers with an “Okay!” from somewhere out of sight,[7] and when she tells the newly arrived Molly that she may call him “big ol’ smellyface”, he just grins and bops her on the shoulder.[4] That bop is the couple’s one hard moment in the comic. Molly screams at him not to hurt Janet, Abbey glares, and both parents freeze, getting their first real look at what the children lived through before they arrived.[4] The two are a cat and a dog, and Janet’s account of how badly they wanted a family is the reason the children are theirs at all.[6]
Minor relationships
Kevin gets his liveliest lines opposite Molly. She hovers over his laptop handing out design advice while he winces at her colour choices,[9] and she takes his bet that she will not last until midnight on New Year’s Eve without a second thought.[3] It is a long way from the little girl who misread his shoulder-bop as a threat.[4]

Trivia
- Kevin and Janet were first written as Abbey’s foster parents. Veronica’s commentary calls this a mistake and says the story was rewritten so that Abbey is fully adopted, adding “They’re his parents!”[5] The children did spend time in foster care before that.[10]
- Neither child calls him Dad. Asked whether that might change, Veronica said Molly has no excuse not to, but that you cannot do much with the name Kevin, since “Kev/Kevie” does not sound like anything a daughter would call her father.[11]
- His job is only ever named in the side story Molly’s Adventure, where a tied-up Molly informs her kidnapper that Kevin is a lawyer.[12]
