Augustus is a Siamese cat a little older than the main cast. He entered the comic as a silver-tongued informant for Alejandro's gang, preying on Daisy and menacing half the friend group, and the story has spent years slowly walking him back from it. These days he lives in Lucy's family's guest room, tutors her little brother, and runs a one-cat protection service for exactly the sort of girl his old crowd used to target.

Personality

For his first few in-comic years, Augustus was a manipulator with a genuine craft. His method was to find the loneliest person in a group and make himself the only one who understood them, which is exactly the treatment Daisy got at the pool, at lunch, and after school.[1][2] He sank Tess's standing just by asking her a pointed question about "honesty",[3] and he researched Abbey's abusive father specifically so he would have something to break him with.[4] The catch, revealed slowly, is that none of it was freelance. Alejandro beat him for information, Toby held his past over him as blackmail, and going to the police was never an option in his mind. As he puts it, "It's not like they don't have shit on me… I don't want to be the one to snitch. He'd remember."[5]

Even at his warmest, he tends to comfort people by insulting them. When Lucy admits in December that she is about ready to give up on everything, his answer is "You're absolutely worthless."[6] What follows, though, is maybe the most honest thing he says in the whole comic: he has come to terms with loving Daisy from a distance, and it's enough for him to know she's smiling somewhere.[7] "You're a real brat, you know that?" is how he consoles Lucy in On the Sidelines.[8] He is also rigid about letting people make their own calls, even terrible ones. When he finds Lucy on a rooftop ledge in Ten Seconds to Midnight, he pleads with her at first, but the moment she snaps that everyone decides what's best for her, he backs off with "Okay. Do what you want. I'll wait downstairs until you're done."[9] He really does go downstairs and wait, too.

Kindness pointed in his direction, on the other hand, does not compute. Offered a home, he cries and insists "No.. that's a prank. That's ridiculous. You don't really mean that."[10] On his first night under a stable roof, he marvels at how quiet the house is.[11] He has never had a birthday party before Lucy throws him one,[12] and when three college acceptances land at once, all he can manage is "I just need a minute."[13]

For all the manipulation, he has never had many illusions about himself. "Yeah. I'm a fuckup," he tells Daisy when he finally apologizes. "A fuckup who doesn't know how to be straight with anyone anymore."[14] All the same, the reformed version of him has a hard line on consent. The boy who once pinned Daisy against a tree is later the one shouting "A.. Aren't you supposed to ASK?" when Lucy kisses him without warning.[15] Romance in general holds little interest for him. He tells Lucy flatly "You're not my type.",[16] and says much the same about her to her own father.[17] In her commentary, Veronica reads him as aromantic even setting his history aside.

All of it runs on the same skill set: reading people fast, saying exactly the thing that will land, and keeping a tally of everyone's soft spots. The only real change since his gang days is where the information goes — these days it goes into walking Lucy home and chasing off Mike, not into Alejandro's hands.

Appearance

Augustus is a Siamese cat with primarily white fur, though he has prominent black patches on his arms and legs that give him the appearance of wearing knee high boots and gloves. He has black eyes with a stud piercing in his left eyebrow, and messy, white hair with long center parted bangs.

Always rocking a black tank top undershirt, Augustus wears various outfits throughout the comic. Most notable are the poncho worn in his debut through to the end of his junior year, and the black leather jacket with a buckled collar that replaces the poncho at the start of his first senior year. The jacket lasted exactly one night at Lucy's house before her mother confiscated the "filthy" thing for the wash.[10] Since moving in, he has also taken to borrowing Jordan's basketball hoodies.[18]

His hair has a small history of its own. The bangs are asymmetrical from his debut onward,[1] and they only get evened out around Total Recall,[19] on Lucy's parting advice that he looked "like a freaken idiot" otherwise.[20] The eyebrow stud goes back further still. Melanie pierced it herself with a needle on a bathroom floor, telling the young shoplifter "Ya gotta top it off with a piercing to seal the deal."[21]

Significant events

Augustus makes his debut in Carry On, chatting up a nervous Daisy at swim class with "Well, I think you look beautiful."[1] He ends the chapter watching Lucy from behind a tree.[22] Over the following chapters he works on Daisy in earnest. He plants doubts about Tess at the group's lunch table,[2] then retells the story of Roger on a hillside in Bonding to poison her against Tess for good.[23] When he offers to make her feel like "the most desirable girl in the world..", Daisy shoves him off and runs.[24] Later, in Rising Temperature, he steers a lonely Daisy toward her carnival scheme with Mike.[25]

In Love My Way, after Mike rejects Daisy, Augustus corners her against a tree and assaults her.[26] Abbey pulls him off, and Augustus deliberately baits him over his abusive father until the boy breaks down.[4] Daisy slaps him, glimpses a scar under his hair, and tells him to go.[27] The other shoe drops in Moving On: he has been feeding the group's schedules to Toby and Alejandro all along, privately thinking "I'm sorry, Daisy.. I tried to keep you out of this.."[28]

A year on, his attention shifts to Lucy, partly because she keeps seeking him out. Their bleacher confrontation in Pillow Talk ends with a simultaneous "I don't like you.",[29] which somehow becomes the foundation of a prickly companionship across Call Waiting, On the Sidelines and On Our Own.[30] The pattern peaks in December, where his brutal honesty and his confession about Daisy arrive in the same library conversation.[7] Then, on New Year's Eve, he spots a silhouette up on a rooftop ledge. He sprints up screaming "WAIT!!" and pulls Lucy back from the edge.[31] When she protests, he goes downstairs and waits for her there instead.[9]

The next year, he ambushes Daisy in a storage room in Total Recall, but this time only to apologize. Her answer is "You need help. Even if it can't be from me."[32] Trapped then lays out his entire history, framed as a story he told Lucy before she left Roseville: the neglected childhood, the recruitment, Melanie, and the blackmail Toby still holds over him.[33] Lucy slaps him, calls him a survivor, and tells him not to screw up his final year.[20] He closes the chapter alone on the abandoned warehouse rooftop, raising a quiet toast to the absent Lucy.[34]

Everything the comic had said about him gets turned on its head in Love Again. Lucy returns and reveals that Augustus is "the boy who saved my life."[35] A flashback shows him finding her dying in the snow after her suicide attempt, sounding cold as ice even as he dials 911.[36] It also comes out that Toby's forced absences cost him his graduation — "That absentee policy's no joke, huh."[37] Her family offers him their guest room until he graduates. He breaks down, accepts, and gets Lucy's house rules that same night: no skipping class, and no going near Daisy.[10][38]

His repeated senior year is the quietest stretch of his life so far. He tutors Jordan for the SATs without mercy in Test Dummy,[39] and gets his first-ever birthday party, a party of two, in Escape Route.[12] That same chapter, Lucy insists on following him home, and he gives her the grim tour of the old neighborhood, his passed-out mother and his bare mattress.[40] Toby still calls every day, and Augustus lets every call go to voicemail.[41]

In Burnt Bridges, he and Mike finally end up in the same room. Augustus summons him with a note and hears out his side of the whole Lucy disaster. His answer is to tell Mike to "just leave her the fuck alone for once", and in exchange he agrees to look after her himself.[42][43] The same chapter flashes back to Lucy kissing him in a dissociative spiral. He refuses her outright, holds her through "I wanna die so bad.", and answers with a "Shut up. I love you." and a kiss on the forehead.[44][45]

When Mike keeps coming around anyway, Augustus goes to war. He pleads Lucy's case at Mike's locker in First-Degree Burn,[46] and in Line in the Sand he plants himself in Mike's new friend group. First comes a pointed movie parable, then a public rundown of everything Mike did to Lucy.[47][48] He promises to keep it up "until he finally leaves you the fuck alone".[49] Mike eventually snaps and throws him to the ground, and Augustus just laughs from the dirt. "That was great. Damn!"[50][51]

The chapter currently running finds him opening three thick envelopes at once, among them an acceptance to his top school with a partial scholarship.[13] Alone with the letter, he lets Toby's daily call ring out with a "Nah." and an "Idiot."[52] Out in the hallway, Lucy hears the phone buzz on and on, and clenches a trembling fist.[53]

Major relationships

Lucy

Ask either of them and they will tell you, in perfect unison, "I don't like you."[29] He started out stalking her at the river.[22] She, in turn, went out of her way to raid his locker, and once chased him all the way onto his hour-long bus home, where he lied to the driver to strand her.[30] Somewhere in all the insults, something real took root. He told her hard truths nobody else would, and he saved her life twice: once on a rooftop ledge, and once in the snow, a save the comic kept hidden until Love Again.[31][35]

Since her return, Lucy has been repaying the debt with interest. She declared "This year, I'm gonna fight for you!" and meant it,[54] bringing him into her family's home and throwing him his first birthday party.[12] At New Year's they shook hands on the porch, his only request of her being that she stay alive.[55] He watches over her just as fiercely, walking her home whether she likes it or not[56] and pressing her about her nightmares.[57] Both flatly deny any romance, and her kiss in Burnt Bridges got the gentlest possible refusal.[45] The arrangement has its friction, though. Lucy has snapped "I missed when you were a creep." at him,[58] and the current chapter leaves her trembling outside his door while his old handlers ring his phone.[53]

Daisy

Daisy started out as an assignment. Augustus was sent after her friend group, and even then he tried to keep her out of the operation.[28] Somewhere along the way he fell for her for real. For years he kept a small photo of her taped inside his nearly empty locker, along with a daisy flower pressed in his book.[30][8] None of that softens what he did. He isolated her, manipulated her, and assaulted her, and the comic never lets him forget it.[26]

It was Daisy who pitied him before anyone else did, wondering aloud whether "maybe he's more than just that..",[59] and it was Daisy who, when he finally apologized, drew the line that still stands: "You need help. Even if it can't be from me."[32] Nowadays the distance is enforced by house rule, Lucy having declared Daisy "STILL off-limits" on his first night in the guest room.[38] Veronica has been open that his love for Daisy was never a healthy thing to begin with; in her words, "Daisy felt like his salvation."

Alejandro and Toby

Alejandro recruits his "li'l mathematician" in Trapped.

Alejandro got hold of him young, catching a neglected child shoplifting and offering him somewhere to be,[60] and his "You're a keeper!" was about the first praise Augustus had ever received.[61] It didn't stay friendly for long. By high school, Alejandro was beating him for information on the friend group, while Toby, the gang's cigarette-smoking handler, held the Melanie affair over him as standing blackmail.[33] He never seriously considered going to the police, certain that Alejandro would remember a snitch.[5]

Toby still calls him every single day, and while the calls used to make him anxious, he now finds it "kind of refreshing to just let it pass".[41] With a scholarship letter in one hand, he waves off the latest call with a "Nah." and an "Idiot."[52]

Melanie

Melanie was Alejandro's girlfriend, and the only person in that apartment who was kind to the kid doing their shoplifting. "Yer a good kid, Augustus. Don't let 'em ruin you.", she told him.[62] She gave him his piercing and shared his dream of a scholarship and a way out.[21] She also drew him into a secret sexual relationship when he was well younger than she was;[63] the comic renders those scenes tenderly, but Veronica is blunt about it in her commentary: Melanie's own suffering "doesn't justify what she did to Augustus."

When Alejandro found out about the two of them, he nearly killed her. Augustus fainted at the sight, then saved himself the only way left to him, echoing Alejandro's "Dumb bitch." with a grin.[64] He said goodbye to her at the hospital,[65] and remembers her as "the only one who got away.."[33] The scholarship he lands in the current chapter is the same escape plan she dreamed up with him all those years ago.[13]

Mike

Augustus pleads Lucy's case at Mike's locker in First-Degree Burn.

For years, their entire relationship consisted of Augustus calling him "green eyes" on the way out of a library.[66] That changed in Burnt Bridges, when Augustus summoned him with a note because "I just wanted to hear your side of the story."[67] He picked Mike's excuses apart and extracted a promise to leave Lucy alone. Then he surprised them both with a piece of honest advice: "People don't usually end up with their third-grade crushes, you know."[68]

The truce didn't hold, so Augustus became its enforcer. He asked nicely at first, pleading at Mike's locker to "please just give us recess" because Lucy "hasn't been in a good way."[46] When that failed, he escalated across Line in the Sand, publicly reading Mike as "POSSESSIVE" and threatening to "spell it out for your boyfriend".[69] Mike answered by grabbing his face and throwing him to the ground. Augustus counted that as a win, too: "Guess you got nothing to hide after all, eh, Michael?"[51]

Lucy's family

The household adopted him about as fast as a household can. Lucy's mom hugged him, crying, the night they met ("My precious baby.. if it wasn't for you..") and has mothered him aggressively ever since, confiscating his filthy jacket and plying him with juice, cookies and probing questions.[70][71] Lucy's dad offered him the guest room until graduation, with a "No funny business" rider attached.[17]

Jordan, for his part, took a little longer to warm up to him. He went from schoolyard wariness to begging for tutoring ("C'mon, you saved my sister, save me too!"), and these days he's a genuine friend with a bad case of college-letter envy.[72][73] Sam remains the holdout, whose contributions so far amount to "Who's the creep" and, upon hearing the no-funny-business rule, "Good."[74][17]

  • The "Final Fantasy Cat" nickname is David's doing in-comic, born from his "Sephiroth" comparison in Onwards to Adventure,[77] but Veronica had already used it in her commentary on his debut chapter, asking "what is your deal, Final Fantasy Cat.."[22]
  • He claims to have a little brother at his debut,[1] and Daisy later recalls "Oh, my brother's sick again…" among his manipulative cover lines.[27] No brother has ever appeared in the comic.
  • The way Line in the Sand mirrors December was deliberate. Responding to a fan's side-by-side reading of the two breakups, Veronica confirmed "the mirrorings being my intention" and called them "two nightmare sibling chapters……"[86]
