Augustus invites himself into Mike’s recess circle, and he hasn’t come to talk movies. By the end of lunch the truth about December is out in the open, Lucy is back at her old table, and Mike is standing alone by the track.

Synopsis

Mike takes Sandy’s calls throughout the day. While she chatters happily about school and her modeling work, he lies in bed, brushes his teeth and sinks into the bath, barely saying a word.[1]

Out by the running track, Mike is hurt to learn that James and David have planned a Saturday movie marathon without him.[2] Augustus strolls up, friendly as anything, and steers the conversation toward “Chrysalis”, a film about a husband who psychologically breaks his wife down until she has to be hospitalized.[3] Augustus suggests Mike watch it, since he “might learn a lot.”[4]

Lucy arrives to rein Augustus in, but he isn’t finished. He announces that he’ll keep doing this every recess until Mike finally leaves her alone.[5] Mike won’t tell James what he did, so Augustus does it for him. Mike told Lucy that all her friends would abandon her and called her an unlovable parasite, “the words that sent her to a psych ward.”[6] James asks whether any of it is true, and Mike can’t answer.[7] When Augustus starts hinting at Mike’s feelings for James, Mike snaps. He grabs Augustus by the face, screaming at him to shut up, and hurls him to the ground.[8] Augustus hits his head, and laughs.[9]

Mike turns on Lucy, insisting she was the one who strung him along. She kicks him in the stomach mid-sentence, then looks troubled immediately afterward.[10] The letters to Sandy never stopped, she reminds him.[11] As panels redraw moments from their shared past, she asks if he really thought she didn’t know she was “just convenient”, someone who made him feel good about himself.[12] James responds by telling Mike he’s messed up.[13]

David interrupts and orders Augustus to go back inside.[14] He tells Lucy she is too good to roll around in the mud and asks her to come back to the lunch table.[15] Augustus can sit with Rachel’s seniors, he proposes, while Mike can keep the track to himself.[16]

Mike stops James on the way inside, begging him not to leave too. He gets “Guess I dodged a bullet, huh?” for his trouble, along with a parting shot about feeling sorry for his girlfriend.[17] The school door clicks shut, and Mike is left standing alone by the track.[18]

Lucy’s return causes an uproar at the table. Sue leaps up so fast she cracks her cast.[19] Augustus settles in with the seniors next door.[20] Paulo, though, can’t stop worrying about Mike. Lucy tells him to go see him, then quietly asks what it was he once said. “Say the word”?[21][22] Paulo sits back down. When Sue asks whether this is a one-time visit, Lucy watches Augustus laughing with his new table and answers, “Nah.. I think I’m here to stay.”[23]

Character dynamics

  • Mike and James: Mike is visibly hurt that James lent David the magazine first and asks why James did not tell him about it.[24] Augustus accuses Mike of wanting to be “first in their mind”, even when he doesn’t want them.[8] After hearing what Mike did to Lucy, James rejects Mike’s plea not to leave and walks away, telling him he feels sorry for his girlfriend.[18]
  • Mike and Lucy: Mike promised Augustus that he would never speak to Lucy again.[25] They do not speak again until this chapter. Here, Mike and Lucy confront each other. Lucy tells him that he strung her along, not the other way around, and that she always knew what she was to him.[11] When Mike reaches for Lucy, Augustus steps between them and says he will not let Mike break another promise.[26]
  • Lucy and the friend group: Lucy has been spending lunch at the oval with Augustus instead of returning to her old table. Veronica has said this was Lucy’s choice because her friends want nothing to do with Augustus.[27] David persuades Lucy to rejoin them,[15] and she later says “I think I’m here to stay”, expressing her intention to keep sitting with the group.[23]
  • Paulo and Lucy: In Double Down, Paulo told Lucy he would cut Mike off whenever she asked.[28] When she repeats that promise as Paulo gets up to check on Mike, he sits back down at the table.[22]
  • Augustus and the seniors: Lucy has wanted Augustus spending time with his other friends for months, and the seniors are plainly happy to take him in.[29] Rachel wastes no time claiming the seat beside her.[20]
  • James and Lucy: James calls Lucy the “arcade girl” before they trade insults and arrange an after-school race.[29] Veronica’s commentary calls a hypothetical pairing “essentially just Mucy but without the baggage”, but says it is not going to happen. She adds that James isn’t straight and that Lucy needs friends with no romantic interest in her.[30]

  • Veronica’s commentary notes the chapter was reworked more than once. It was planned at 40 pages, cut down to 36, and finally published at 44.[1]
  • Augustus dressed in his original outfit for the occasion on purpose. Per Veronica’s commentary, he wanted to look like “the biggest internet tough guy edgelord around.”[31]
  • David’s “the dashing Final Fantasy Cat” makes his nickname for Augustus official.[32] He first used the phrase years earlier,[33] then applied it to Augustus much later.[34]
  • The memory montage under Lucy’s speech redraws moments from all over the series, from the skateboard catch in the very first chapter[35] to the snowy-hill kiss in Eternal Flame.[36] Veronica’s commentary invites readers to “find them all.”[12]
  • Veronica clarified in her commentary that the lunchtime track scenes were never official practice. James and David were just messing around outside, which is why no other track members show up.[37]
  • Veronica’s commentary on Augustus’s laughing fit says he “loves getting people to go mask-off, all he needs is to get a little roughed up to get results”, and that he “misses Abbey.”[9]
  • On Tumblr, Veronica framed Augustus’s needling of Mike as a relapse into old habits: “Recovery/betterment isn’t a straight arrow up ... No justification, just cause and effect.”[38]

  • December: Veronica has confirmed this chapter was written as a deliberate mirror of December, the winter phone call where Mike told Lucy “You’re a parasite”[39] and “Nobody can love you for who you are.”[40][41] Augustus’s “unlovable parasite” fuses the two lines into one.[6]
