One last night of free candy is all Sue wants out of Lucy. What the gang gets instead is Mike at his cruelest, Paulo committing crimes by voicemail, and a phone call from Sandy that answers nothing at all.

Synopsis

Sue turns up at Lucy’s house in a Carmen Sandiego costume, angling for one last Halloween of free candy before people start telling them to grow up.[1] Jordan insists on chaperoning his sister, which visibly stings her,[2] so Lucy proposes Augustus as her escort instead, reasoning that he’ll scare off “the people I don’t wanna see.”[3] Her own costume turns out to be the elaborate blue ballgown from the school play, worn purely to torment Sue.[4]

Between houses, Sue carefully asks where Yashy and the other pets are. They stayed behind with Lucy’s aunt. Yashy couldn’t face coming back to Roseville and “never wants to see Mike again,” while Chirpy has been reunited with her long-lost mother and a twin brother.[5]

Mike and Daisy spot them from across the street.[6] Mike rants that Lucy is pulling attention-grabbing stunts to make him jealous. Daisy pushes back harder and harder until she finally snaps. “Maybe it’s not about you all the time, okay?!”[7] Then she marches across the street to trick-or-treat with Lucy’s group instead.[8]

Mike doesn’t stay alone for long. Paulo, dressed as the Joker with David as his Batman, ambushes him from the bushes and ceremonially dumps his hated candy corn into Mike’s bag.[9] Once he learns that Mike’s real problem is Lucy being with the others, Paulo grabs his hand and hauls him over anyway.[10] His relentless cheering-up eventually uncovers the truth: “She stopped replying again, huh.”[11]

Lucy suggests Mike simply call Sandy and leave a sweet voicemail. He snaps at her, then turns on Daisy, screaming that third grade was eight years ago and Sandy owes her nothing.[12] Mid-tirade, he realizes his phone is gone. Paulo has it, and is busy leaving Sandy a voicemail that calls her “a selfish bitch.”[13] Paulo isn’t sorry either. If all’s well in Sandy-land, he figures, she’ll call right back.[14] The phone stays quiet, and Lucy declares that little babies who want to pick fights can stay behind. The whole group, Daisy included, walks off without Mike.[15]

Down the street, Paulo comforts the guilt-stricken Daisy, telling her “You deserve to be remembered.”[16] She takes his arm and stays there, leaving him rigid and internally screaming.[17]

Mike’s phone, meanwhile, finally starts buzzing. Sandy is calling, but the others are already too far away to hear Mike shout to them.[18] The call brings him no comfort. Sandy explains she’s under NDA for a life-changing Fashion Week job, then turns unexpectedly grave: “I know I haven’t been good to you. At all.”[19] She won’t say what she means. Mike reassures her, but she answers with a quiet “You’re.. too nice..” and rings off for an early morning.[20]

The night ends with Lucy pulling Paulo aside to apologize, both for the ballgown and for not being able to be what he wanted. He takes it gracefully and even flirts a little. Then Daisy pops up behind them, chocolate-smeared, to ask what they’re talking about.[21]

Character dynamics

Paulo, dressed as the Joker, leaps out of the bushes at a screaming Mike while yelling "GOTCH-- aww shit".
Paulo makes his entrance.
  • Mike and Daisy: Daisy has spent years making excuses for “Mikie,” but here she challenges his Lucy-bashing to his face. He answers her one jab at Sandy with a vicious public tirade. By the end of the night she’s walking away with everyone else, apologizing for “being so stupid about Mikie all this time.”[8][12][16]
  • Mike and Paulo: Paulo still seeks Mike out and tries to cheer him up. He has lectured Mike about Sandy’s silence before,[11][22] but stealing his phone to chew Sandy out is a line Mike never wanted crossed. Mike is left devastated, while Paulo walks off unrepentant, and when no callback comes he considers himself vindicated.[13][14]
  • Mike and Sandy: Mike defends his long-distance relationship with Sandy, insisting he should be happy if she is.[11] When Sandy calls, she admits outright that she hasn’t been good to Mike. Sandy refuses to explain what she means, so Mike still does not know why she believes she has treated him badly.[19][20]
  • Paulo and Daisy: Paulo reassures Daisy that she deserves to be remembered. She takes his arm and stays close for the rest of the night, which he survives with visible effort.[16][17]
  • Lucy and Paulo: Lucy and Paulo finally discuss her rejection of him in After You.[23] Lucy apologizes for the ballgown and for not being more than what he wanted. Paulo waves it off gently and flirts with her.[21]

Trivia & observations

Daisy leans contentedly on Paulo's arm with her eyes closed while Paulo stands rigid and blushing.
Daisy leans on Paulo, who copes admirably on the outside.
  • Veronica has explained the gang’s costume picks. Kermit was “a pretty instant choice” for Mike, while Paulo’s Joker came from looking up popular 2008 Halloween costumes, which conveniently made David his Batman. Sue got Carmen Sandiego as “a cool nerd costume,” and Daisy would be too busy to think of anything unique, so she just goes as a witch again.[24] Veronica’s commentary under page 37 also singles out Mike’s “pathetic costume” as a favorite: “It feels so fitting.”[25]
  • Per Veronica’s commentary, the explanation of the pets’ whereabouts had been planned for this chapter ever since Lucy’s return in Love Again.[26] She has since said the pets are unlikely to ever return on-panel, but that they’re doing fine with Lucy’s aunt.[27]
  • “Amber” is the first time Chirpy’s mother has been named anywhere in the comic. Per the commentary, the reunion adapts a storyline Veronica wrote for the original comics when she was 11 or 12.[5]
  • Per the commentary under page 13, the page first went up as an April Fool’s joke version before being swapped for the real one. The joke page survives on Candybooru.[28]
  • During the Sandy phone-call pages, the authors ran an in-character Instagram for “the real life Sandy, famous fashion model” on @bcbcomic, tied into Paulo’s voicemail. Oliver’s commentary under page 36 teased, “has anyone figured out what Lucy is doing on Sandy’s Instagram account today..?”[18]
  • Paulo’s “Don’t let no imaginary girlfriends tell you otherwise” turns one of his own oldest jabs inside out. He used to needle Mike about his “imaginary girlfriend,” and here he aims it at Sandy on Daisy’s behalf.[16][29]
  • David greets Augustus as both “Final Fantasy Cat” and “brother Melfice,” mixing up two different games, which Lucy points out on-panel. “Final Fantasy Cat” is a David gag of long standing.[30][31]

Related chapters

  • Mischief Night: Paulo’s “Twilight getup” that “we don’t talk about” is his glittery vampire costume from the gang’s previous Halloween outing,[32] and Sue’s “Elle” nickname for Lucy debuted there too.[33] The candy corn even ran the other way back then, when Mike volunteered to take everyone’s and got dosed with sleeping pills for his trouble.[34]
  • Curtain Call: Lucy calls the blue ballgown her “costume.” It is the dress from the school play staged there,[35] and the “pretty hot night” Paulo mentions is their dressing-room makeout on opening night.[36]
  • Eternal Flame: Sandy calls Mike again in that chapter, and this time she ends the relationship. Her “You’re really nice, you’re too nice.. I don’t deserve someone like you” is nearly word for word what she says here.[37]
