The Silvershore trip winds down with Mike saying some genuinely chilling things about Lucy, Tess and Paulo screaming at each other over a campfire, and David playing matchmaker with a fairy tale, a kidnapping, and one impossible choice.
Synopsis
The chapter opens in the alley behind the public restroom, moments after Mike's brush with death. Bandaged up, he holds Lucy while she sobs, answering everything she says with a flat "sorry"; his face, hidden from her, shows irritation rather than sympathy.[1] Zachary has been watching through the restroom window, and when Mike catches him frozen mid-escape, the startled Zachary jumps straight down into the toilet bowl.[2]
On the walk back, Zachary means it kindly when he tells Mike that Lucy really loves him.[3] Mike scoffs at the very idea. He tells Zachary that Lucy only cares about herself and simply "needs" him, then walks off and leaves Zachary stunned under the streetlights.[4]
Back at the campfire, the truth-or-dare game takes a sharp turn when Sue asks Tess who she would have preferred to take her virginity.[5] Her answer is Paulo, but the mood sours when she questions how she could ever expect him to be faithful.[6] Paulo erupts that they aren't even a couple and storms off screaming about girls.[7] The rest of the group glares David into going after him.[8]
David sniffs Paulo out in his hotel room, sulking in the gap behind the bed's headboard.[9] Paulo admits that Tess infuriates him, but he loves her anyway.[10] Then David suggests Daisy, and Paulo hits the roof — she's a kid and practically his sister.[11] David responds by announcing a "HYPOCRITICAL SITUATION!"[12]
David spins a fairy tale of two kingdoms, with Daisy as the Princess of Peace and Tess as the Queen of War.[13] Paulo himself plays a caped wandering hero.[14] Both monarchs are kidnapped, and at a fork in the forest road Abbey appears to lay out the dilemma.[15] One path leads to each lady, and whichever one Paulo doesn't reach will be executed.[16]

Paulo really does love Tess, but Daisy was the first person who ever wanted to be his friend, and all he's ever done is take her for granted. David just grins and tells him he likes her. Paulo is still lost in thought when Mike's voice snaps him back to the present, asking from beside his half-packed suitcase whether he's alright.[18]
Paulo deflects and heads into the hallway for a walk, but Tess is there, nervous and asking to talk. He scowls, says "Oh, it's you.", and turns his back on her as the chapter ends.[19]
