Synopsis

Paulo brandishes a water pistol in the park and declares a water gun fight, claiming David for his team. Daisy wants no part of it, and the moment Paulo starts counting to ten she bolts, screaming, until she spots Mike and Lucy walking by and latches onto Mike with a desperate "JOIN MY TEAM!!"[1]

Paulo cheerfully assigns them both to Daisy's team, then leans in to share the real plan with David. Lucy is famously terrified of water, which should make her an easy target, and besides, "a wet Lucy would be pretty hot." That settles it, and David is a true believer.[2]

The ambush starts perfectly, with Paulo stalking through the trees, calling out Lucy's name and blasting her point-blank in the face, grinning. Then, for a long moment, nothing happens at all, as Paulo stays frozen mid-grin and Lucy stands drenched with her eyes clenched shut, until eventually he manages a weak ".. You're okay with this?"[3]

Lucy answers by grabbing Paulo by the mouth with a "CRUNCH", poking the water gun into it and firing, which leaves Paulo flat on his back with his eyes glazed over. David could not be happier with the outcome, since as far as he can tell, "She's cured!"[3]

A drenched Lucy grabs Paulo by the mouth with a "CRUNCH" as his eyes go extremely wide.
Paulo finds out exactly what Lucy's fear of water does and doesn't cover.

Trivia & observations

  • Per the commentary under the first page, the chapter originally belonged to Volume Three and was drawn in colour. During the Omnibus revamp the authors decided it fit Volume Two better, so it was redone in monochrome to match that volume's look. It was also published well out of story order, running in September 2012 when the webcomic's present day was long past this point, so first-run readers got it as a look back at a friendlier Mike-and-Lucy era.[1]
  • Paulo's whispered "Poor little hydrophobic Lucy.." pitch reaches back to Troubled Waters, where Mike told Tess that Lucy is "deathly afraid of the water" while Lucy sat out of swim class. Paulo was there for that conversation.[2][4]
  • The commentary under the final page pokes fun at Paulo's grasp of that fear: "Does he seriously think she faints when she's in the shower? Did he assume all this time Lucy never showered????"[3]
  • Daisy's screaming exit has lore behind it too. Her curls, as she complains in Carry On, "frizz up as soon as they touch the water!", and she was mortified when Mike saw her rain-frizzed back in Helping Hands.[1][5][6]

Related chapters

  • Pick Me Up: Mike and Lucy are only strolling together here because Paulo spent the previous chapter coaxing them back onto speaking terms after a fight. That chapter also runs the same joke as this one, with Paulo delivering a crude come-on and taking Lucy's kick to the throat for it, much like the gun-in-the-mouth treatment he earns here.
  • Troubled Waters: This is where Lucy's fear of water comes from. She sits out of swim class while Mike admits she has been "deathly afraid of the water" ever since something he did long ago.
  • New Beginnings: Abbey and Daisy became a couple two chapters before this one, which is why Abbey takes it for granted that the two of them are a team.
  • A Distance Apart: Paulo tries the water teasing again two chapters later, miming an ocean wave at a miserable Lucy. It goes about as well for him as it does here.
