Daisy is convinced her birthday has been forgotten. In fact, her friends have a mail-ordered surprise waiting for her, and since her name happens to match a certain Mario princess, Tess couldn't resist. The birthday girl is not amused.
Synopsis
The page opens on Daisy sighing alone against a gloomy backdrop, believing her birthday has slipped everyone's mind. She doesn't get to mope for long. Mike, Paulo, David, Tess and Lucy appear behind her with a full birthday chorus, and Daisy lights up in a cloud of sparkles, gushing "♥ Oweeee, you guys remembered!! ♥" Lucy points out that they've celebrated her birthday for the past eight years, so remembering was never really in doubt.[1]
Tess takes charge of the gift. She apologizes that it wasn't ready that morning, since she had to pick it up from the post office, and tells Daisy to close her eyes. Then, with Mike's help, she holds up the big reveal: a dress modeled on Princess Daisy's from the Mario series. Daisy is anything but flattered. She pouts and storms off in a huff, while Mike and Tess giggle behind her and Lucy offers a consoling "chin up princess".[1]
Rejected dress or not, the matching accessories don't go to waste. In the final panel David turns up wearing a flower-motif crown and earrings, introducing himself with a cheery "Hi, I'm David!" Paulo just wants to know where he got them.[1]
Trivia & observations
- Per the authors' commentary under the page, Daisy's birthday is September 27th. They also joke that, the outfit design being copyrighted, Daisy "burned it, thankfully".[1]
- The princess joke starts on this very page. The Mario naming gags are older, though: Mike was calling Yashy a "Yoshi-lookin' blob" back in the comic's earliest pages.[1][2]
- Lucy's eight years of celebrations reaches back to around first grade, which works fine for the oldest friendships. Her "we" is a little generous, though, since Paulo only transferred to their school in fifth grade and Tess joined the lunch table at the start of freshman year.[3][4]
- This is the first of the one-page birthday chapters to include Tess. The pets, who turned up for both Mike's Birthday and Yashy's Birthday, sit this one out.[5][6]
- Paulo spends the whole page avoiding Daisy's eye, and looks away blushing when the dress comes out. It's nothing new, though. He froze up blushing the last time she clung to him, too.[1][7]
- Being remembered is rather a sore spot for Daisy, who once talked herself through being left off Katie's sleepover list with "She musta misplaced my invitation but that's okay…"[7]
