Haley is Mike's younger sister, a sophomore at Roseville High School and the middle child of her family. At home she splits her time between teasing her brother and hauling around their baby brother Chris, often at the same time. According to Veronica, "Haley doesn't hate Mike! She just resents him a little! There's a very big difference!"[1]

Personality

Making fun of Mike is pretty much Haley's default setting. Her parting shot at her own introduction is to ask Lucy to "fix that stick up his ass that appears whenever he isn't on the phone with ~Sandy~".[2] In the years since, she has thrown the mail directly into his face[3] and announced his friends' arrival with "Sue's downstairs. With all those other losers."[4]

She is also rather invested in her own image. Mike's mornings involve waiting on the bathroom while she confidently brushes her hair.[5] When he finally gets a makeover, her review is "Finally! My friends'll stop asking me why my brother doesn't go to Hogwarts."[6] She calls people dorks so reliably that Jasmine teases her about it, and Haley's defense is that her dorky brother at least has "impeccably dorky taste."[7]

She has a sly streak too, and it gets a full airing the moment her parents leave her and Mike to babysit: she drops her house robe to reveal a party dress underneath and heads out for the night.[8] By midnight she's back in bed faking sleep, happy to pocket the credit for babysitting she never did.[9]

Haley is a grey Korat cat, with the green eyes that run in her family.[11] Her signature accessory is a yellow bow, worn low under her ear,[12] and her hair is longer than the comic's other ribbon-wearing girls'. Around the house she lounges in a pink robe. She dresses up properly when it counts, though. Her night out in Adult Supervision involves a trendy purple belted dress, silver ball stud earrings, mascara and lipstick.[8]

That longer hair was a deliberate choice on Veronica's part. She first trialed it on Stacy, then handed it to Haley so the two would "stop being so similar to each other as girls with a ribbon on the right side of their head".[13] Her coloring has shifted a bit over the years as well. In the Volume 3 era she, Chris and their father leaned a greenish grey against their mother's purple-grey, a palette Veronica later simplified.[10]

Significant events

Haley spent her first years in the comic on the edges of Mike's home life, and her proper introduction only came in December. She answers the door with Chris in her arms and greets Lucy warmly. Then she sends her brother off with the stick-up-his-ass jab.[2]

Her spotlight chapter is Adult Supervision, where the second the parents leave, she dumps Chris into Mike's arms and heads out to meet friends. His protest that he's never watched the baby before in his life gets a flat "Time to learn."[8] By midnight she's back in bed pretending to sleep, still in her makeup. Only after their mom's grateful goodnight kiss does she wipe off the lipstick with a relieved "whew.."[9]

The rest of her freshman-year appearances keep her firmly in Mike's orbit. Just Beautiful has her riding along to Sandy's fashion show, where she groans theatrically at his hour of fretting and performs a full impersonation of him in his own scarf.[14][15] In Local Area she fells him with a single muttered "Weirdo.",[16] and in Boy Toy she's back on baby duty, proudly reporting that Chris "Ate everything by himself!"[17]

Her sophomore year opens with Sandy's visit in Model Girlfriend. From the couch, she grumbles "But I wanna embarrass him NOW!!"[18] Later she bursts into Mike's room and catches the couple mid-embrace. His scarf is off, and she laughs behind her hand at his bare neck.[19] Love Again finally shows her at school, sitting at Jasmine's cafeteria table.[7] In Unwanted Gift she pelts a moping Mike with the mail and strolls off cackling.[3]

Her one genuinely heavy moment comes in Eternal Flame, right after Mike's sobbing, room-trashing breakdown. Haley knocks softly and asks, "Mike? Everything okay in there?"[20] He bolts past her yelling "I need some SPACE!" She reaches after him with an unfinished "What happened!? Is it about..", but the door slams. She's left staring into his wrecked room.[21]

The most recent chapters have turned toward the family itself. One intermission has her claiming the computer for the day and shutting the door on Mike's whole guild.[22] By Second String, Ellen can't reach her to babysit Chris anymore,[23] and Mike overhears their mother's phone fight about the arrangement: "You think I like putting this on her? She's not his parent, YOU are!"[24] A later chapter finds Haley glaring silently from the kitchen as Ellen pays and praises Mike for the very chore Haley has done for years.[25]

On the surface, this is one long roast. Haley has been needling Mike since the day she was introduced,[2] and she never seems to run out of material. In Blood Lust she spends an entire Halloween special trolling a vampire Mike by acting as his missing reflection.

Underneath it, though, there is love in there somewhere. Her worry in Eternal Flame is real,[21] and Veronica has confirmed it was genuine while warning it was "a once-in-a-lifetime event". In the same post, she teases: "Haley does love Mike at the end of the day! I wonder why that feeling didn't stay that way…"[26]

The resentment, meanwhile, has a pretty concrete source. Haley carries the childcare while Mike collects the parental praise and, lately, the money.[27][25] Merry Christmas, Roseville! shows a world where Mike was never born, and that version of Haley doesn't recognize him at all: "I only have a younger brother."

Ellen

For a long while this was a sweet, low-stakes relationship. Ellen pats Haley's head at breakfast,[5] and it's her trusting goodnight kiss that lets the Adult Supervision con work at all.[9]

The arrangement starts to look a lot sadder in Second String. Ellen knows leaning on Haley as Chris's default sitter is unfair, and says so in that overheard phone fight.[24] Yet in the same chapter she ranks her children out loud, telling Mike "Haley doesn't ace her exams... But you never ask for anything. Michael. My diamond."[27] Haley's answer is to go quiet, dodging her mother's texts and letting the glares do the talking.[23][25]

More her charge than her playmate, Chris is in her arms at her debut,[2] handed off the instant she can escape,[12] and competently fed and managed the rest of the time.[17] Veronica confirms Haley is "the one usually in charge of Chris", with a sympathetic "Middle child struggles, am I right?"[8]

And she's genuinely good at the job: by Second String she has a whole routine down, one Chris can happily recite as "Panda movie an' oranges!"[28] For all her grumbling about the arrangement, none of the resentment ever lands on Chris himself.

Minor relationships

Jasmine and the sophomore table

Haley's school world is Jasmine's cafeteria table, alongside Mina, Cassidy and an unnamed dog boy. Jasmine ribs her as the resident cynic, telling her "you think everyone's a dork", and Haley sulks into a juice box about it.[7] She looks right at home there all the same, happily chattering through lunch in Fuel Economy.[29]

Lucy

Haley is genuinely warm toward her brother's estranged friend, greeting her in December with "It's been a while! Are you finally getting sick of my stupid brother?"[2]

Sandy

Sandy is less a relationship than premium teasing material, from the "~Sandy~" jab at Haley's introduction[2] to the "Darling Sandy" impersonation.[15] Haley's way of finally meeting her in Model Girlfriend is to burst in on her and Mike, and the scene ends with all three of them laughing.[19]

Abbey

Her "Ugh, isn't he one of my brother's dorky-ass friends?" lands squarely on Abbey in Love Again,[7] though by Fuel Economy he's a routine fixture at her lunch table.[29] In Door to Door, she cheerfully profits from his cookie-box shakedown of Mike, declaring it "Restitution for emotional damage!"

Paulo

As far as Haley is concerned, Paulo is entertainment more than anything else. When he dives into Mike's closet to hide from Sue, her verdict is "Okay, this is pretty funny now."[30]

  • Haley dates back to Veronica's childhood original series. Her commentary on Haley's introduction notes that Mike's original baby sister was gender-flipped into Chris for BCB.[2]
  • Her formal, named introduction came in December in 2011, but she'd been on-panel since a silent dinner-table cameo in A Distance Apart two years earlier.[31][2]
  • Veronica's commentary on Model Girlfriend reveals Haley was standing outside Mike's door the entire time Sandy was over, until her mother called dinner.[19]
