Blood Lust is a non-canon Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic that wonders what life would look like if Mike were a vampire. The answer, it turns out, is business as usual, apart from his burning need to drink Lucy’s blood.
Partial synopsis
A rooster crows, and a 6:45 alarm blares.[1] As Mike wakes, he introduces himself in the style of an anime protagonist. He’s sixteen, his favorite class is P.E., math is scary, and he’s “just an ordinary high school boy..” He finishes the introduction while sitting on the edge of his coffin, wearing a cape and showing his fangs. He adds “And vampire.”[2]
At Mike’s house, Mike brushes his fangs and asks Haley to check his face because he has no reflection. Chris interrupts by shrieking “RABIES FACE RABIES FACE”. Mike tattles to Ellen, who scolds Haley for refusing to act as Michael’s mirror. He storms off to school under an umbrella and finds Lucy waiting outside.[3]
Before they reach School, Lucy tells Mike that their other partner has not been pulling his weight on their group project. She plans to bring him to Mike’s house after school.[4] Once they arrive, Paulo greets Mike while wearing a garlic necklace and moves in for a hug. Daisy orders Paulo to throw away the necklace, a wooden stake and a bottle of holy water.[5] Daisy later offers Mike her own blood.[6]
So by the final bell, Mike has everything he needs. Lucy is set on a study session at his place, with nobody leaving until the project is done, and he’s been waiting all day for an opening exactly like that...
Character dynamics
- Mike and Lucy: Mike and Lucy walk to school together as project partners. Mike spends the trip thinking about drinking her blood instead of listening, and Lucy knocks his umbrella away.[4] When Blood Lust was published, the main comic had recently shown Lucy telling Mike that she did not like him anymore.[7]
- Mike and Daisy: Daisy still has a crush on Mike. In Love My Way, she kisses him at the carnival.[8] Mike turns her down on the next page.[9] Here, she offers him her blood and says, “You know, Mikie, you could always suck MY blood..”[6]
Trivia & observations
- Mike sleeps in a coffin,[2] cannot see his reflection,[3] and burns in direct sunlight.[4] Paulo also brings a garlic necklace, a wooden stake and a bottle of holy water to school.[5]
- Like some vampires in folklore, Mike must count objects scattered in front of him. Lucy exploits this by smashing a piggy bank with a hammer, and Mike immediately starts counting the coins.[6]
- Mike’s morning self-introduction parodies a stock anime protagonist opening.[1][2] A similar opening appears in Onwards to Adventure, where a rooster crows from a rooftop while David sleeps.[10]
Related chapters
- Mischief Night: Lucy dresses as a vampire for Halloween.[11] Paulo later calls himself one while wearing a glittering costume.[12] In Blood Lust, Mike is the vampire, while Paulo comes to school with garlic, a wooden stake and holy water.[5]
