Paulo and Daisy finally get a real first date, courtesy of Jordan’s doomed pursuit of Tiff. Meanwhile, Mike is running on empty, Augustus’s college hopes arrive in the mail, and an old flip phone starts buzzing again.
Synopsis
Paulo spots Mike standing motionless in front of the lockers.[1] Mike insists he’s fine. He’s training through recess to keep pace with David, and he goes quiet when Paulo asks when he even eats.[2] He tells Paulo to take care of Lucy instead — “She deserves it,” he says — then holds up his phone with a forced, exhausted smile. Sandy’s keeping him busy.[3]
Daisy fills in the rest by accident when the word “cheated” slips out at her locker.[4] Pressed, she pieces together what little Mike told her: Sandy cheated on him, he cheated too, he went back to Lucy, and Sandy dumped him anyway. Paulo is horrified, and he spends the whole walk out of school raging at Sandy.[5][6]
The couple barely make it off school grounds before a hand grabs Paulo’s shoulder and sends them both into screaming panic.[7] It’s only Jordan, who slowly deduces that they’re dating and is thrilled to be right. He recruits them as backup for a Saturday lunch date with Tiff at Burger-Tron, which they realize means their own very first date.[8]
Saturday goes about as well as anyone but Jordan expected. Tiff announces up front that this isn’t a date, she just wants to try the new Stardust burger, and once she’s finished it she leaves to catch a ride with Enrique.[9][10] Daisy erupts that Jordan loves her, and gets a flat “Takes two to tango.” in return.[11] An exasperated Paulo then blurts out that Jordan’s best friend Matt has a thing for him, and instantly regrets it.[12]
Parked outside Daisy’s house afterwards, Paulo hesitates over the kiss Daisy has been waiting for, and she finally explodes: “Are you gonna kiss me or not?!”[13] She won’t be treated like a baby.[14] Paulo haltingly opens up about his past. Several of his past relationships, Lucy included, went faster than he wanted,[15] and the slower pace he had with Jasmine was better.[16] Daisy insists theirs is way deeper than a fling and agrees to take some time, sealing it with a kiss on his cheek. Paulo hugs her tight and whispers that she has to stop making herself so nice every time they go out.[17]
The mail at home brings Jordan one more rejection, a thin envelope from his fallback college,[18] while the thick envelopes in the pile turn out to be addressed to a stunned Augustus.[19] Lucy reminds him this is the school he wanted, then goes to fetch him a plate of Jordan’s cheer-me-up brownies.[20] Alone in his room, Augustus hears his old flip phone start buzzing on the dresser.[21] He watches it ring out and mutters “Nah.”[22] Then he lounges on the bed and reads his acceptance materials while the phone keeps buzzing.[23] Out in the hallway, Lucy stands frozen with the plate while the ice cream melts. Fingernail marks show in her palm, and her free hand clenches into a trembling fist.[24]
Character dynamics

- Paulo and Daisy: Officially a couple since Rain Check,[25] but a secret one, and until now without a single real date to their name. Here, they finally say what each wants from the relationship. Daisy refuses to be handled like something fragile, and Paulo has learned the hard way that rushing spoiled his past relationships. For once, the two of them agree on a pace out loud.[16]
- Jordan and Tiff: A one-sided pursuit that Tiff has never once encouraged, now shut down about as plainly as it can be. She’s ditched Jordan mid-outing before,[26] but “Takes two to tango” is the most definitive rejection she’s ever handed him, and for once Jordan actually takes it in.[11][27]
- Jordan and Matt: Matt has been quietly in love with Jordan since Fair Game and resolved never to tell him.[28][29] Paulo blurts that secret to Jordan without Matt even in the room.[12] Afterward, Paulo tells Jordan how to handle it. Matt already knows Jordan isn’t an option, but the friendship is worth protecting. And the next time Jordan feels sorry for himself, he should remember that somebody out there thinks he’s worth it.[27]
- Paulo and Mike: The concern is real, and entirely one-way. Lucy herself told Paulo to go see Mike at the end of Line in the Sand,[30] but Mike deflects every question and points Paulo right back toward Lucy. Daisy’s slip then leaves Paulo carrying a secret he has no idea what to do with. He’s torn between his fury at Sandy and the promise he once made to always take Lucy’s side.[5][6]
- Abbey and Paulo: The thaw between these two has reached the point where Abbey trusts Paulo to drive his little sister Molly somewhere nearly an hour away.[31] He’s still wary, though. One over-friendly answer earns Paulo a hand on the shoulder and an “I’ve still got my eye on you, you know.”[1] And Abbey still has no idea who Paulo is actually seeing.
Trivia & observations

- Veronica’s commentary notes the double date “finally” delivers something the end of Volume 7 alluded to, and jokes that readers might have expected a Paulo/Daisy and Mike/Sandy double date instead.[32]
- The hand on Paulo’s shoulder was deliberately staged so that Jordan’s arm could pass for Abbey’s. Per Veronica, moving the camera even a little on the previous page would have given the game away.[7]
- Mike isn’t just training through recess. Veronica’s commentary confirms he is deliberately skipping meals, right down to planning how to keep his mother from noticing.[1]
- Veronica compares the thin-and-thick envelope scene to a similar one in Azumanga Daioh, which she was reading during her own college application anxiety. She applied to two colleges and got into both.[18]
- “August, huh.” is a name pun by design. Per Veronica, “It will be his month, forever.”[23]
- Per Veronica, Daisy had been staring out that front window for a full three hours before Paulo pulled up.[33]
- Veronica later explained on Tumblr why Mike pushes his friends toward Lucy’s side: “he feels he doesn’t deserve it. As Augustus said, he’s gotta atone.” Paulo, meanwhile, “feels he kinda should be on her side. Even if it kills him a bit.”[34]
Related chapters
- Rain Check: Paulo and Daisy got together at this very Burger-Tron, after Daisy overheard his feelings at one of its booths[35] and the two confessed in the rain outside.[36][25] When Daisy calls the restaurant “where the magic happened,” that’s the day she means.[37]
- Double Down: Mike’s library confession there is where Daisy learned about the mutual cheating she lets slip here.[38] It’s also the chapter where Paulo offered to cut Mike off entirely if Lucy would just say the word, the promise that’s still weighing on him now.[39][6] Lucy first noticed fingernail marks pressed into her palm in that chapter, too.[40]
- Fair Game: Matt confided his feelings for Jordan to Paulo here, the very secret Paulo blurts out at the Burger-Tron.[28] It’s also the last time Tiff ditched Jordan partway through an outing, back when Paulo first tried to warn him off her.[26][41]
- Escape Route: Augustus’s endlessly buzzing grey flip phone and the daily calls behind it were first shown there.[42] Lucy also learned in that chapter that the calls had only stopped because the people making them didn’t know she was back.[43] On the final page here, Lucy hears the same buzzing and freezes in the hallway.[24]
