Kind, studious, and rather more complicated than her reputation suggests, Daisy is a straight-A cheerleader at Roseville High School and one of the most devoted members of the junior friend group. Her school years have carried her through a hopeless crush on Mike, two rounds of dating Abbey, and finally a hard-won romance with her best friend Paulo. For a girl everyone insists on calling sweet and innocent, she has done a remarkable amount of living.

Personality

Daisy is the overachiever of the group, a self-declared 4.0 student[1] who tested into Honors II by the end of her freshman year[2] and now runs the cheer squad's practices herself.[3] She has ambitions to match, hoping to become a doctor one day, possibly at a school overseas.[4]

She is also forthright with her feelings to a fault. That honesty can mend things, like her apology to Paulo in Unspoken Rule, which saved a friendship he thought was over.[5] It can wound just as easily, and nobody knows that better than Abbey. He ended their first relationship after Daisy drunkenly demanded to know what made Lucy better than her, right in front of him.[6][7]

She has also grown tired of her own labels. She mocks the words "sweet" and "innocent" when she thinks nobody is listening,[8] and insists "I'm not a baby." when her friends coddle her.[9] She also nurses a long-standing envy of the girls that boys actually notice. As she once put it to Lucy: "Boys ALWAYS approach you and NEVER pay attention to me!!"[10]

All the same, Daisy would rather everyone got along, and she tends to do something about it. After Lucy vanished, she threw a study party to lift the group's spirits.[11] And when Paulo and Abbey's cold war dragged on, she was the one refereeing it until they finally made peace.[12]

Appearance

Daisy is a chubby cat with curly, golden-cream fur, introduced in Simple Pleasures as "a cat with curly golden hair wearing a pearl necklace".[13] The necklace has been her one constant accessory ever since. Veronica has confirmed the build is deliberate: "She's meant to be chubby! ... her fluff isn't hiding a skinny body." The comic's chibi proportions, she notes, just tend to hide it.[14]

Those curls have a mind of their own. Rain frizzes them into a state she finds mortifying,[15] and her fur puffs up completely when she is embarrassed badly enough, as Sandy's visit demonstrated.[16]

Beyond the pearls she mostly goes unclothed, saving outfits for occasions. She has worn a cheer uniform since A Different Side,[17] a party dress for Rachel's birthday,[18] and her Claret cosplay in Guest of Honor, a blue dress with red bows.[19]

Significant events

Middle school

Daisy's debut page tells you most of what you need to know about her early years. She grabs Lucy's tail from her deaf side and takes a kick to the face for the trouble. Then she skips off happily to return "Mikie's" workbook, which "smells really nice, too ♥".[13][20] The middle school chapters run on that crush, from faked falls for Mike's attention[21] to jealous glares at Lucy over her aquarium clipboard.[22] She and Paulo also rescue an injured bird together in Helping Hands, an early sign of a friendship with legs.[23]

Things turn serious in Confrontation, when the group gets lost in the city. Daisy watches the assault on Lucy in paralyzed horror, and afterwards tearfully admits that Lucy was braver than she was.[24] She apologizes to Mike before the chapter is out.[25]

Freshman year

High school begins well enough. Daisy lands in the group's homeroom, drags Mike into Honors English, and needles Tess with the fact that she's taking sophomore math as a freshman.[26] The news that Sandy is Mike's girlfriend leaves her wailing into Paulo's shoulder.[27] That rough patch is also how she first meets Abbey, who helps her up after a fall in gym class in Humble Approach.[28] She also picks up a tutoring job in Midterm Time. Her coaching carries Tess through the exams, but Daisy forgets to study herself, and she winds up with her hands around her tutee's throat.[29]

The year takes its darkest turn at the pool in Carry On, where an older boy named Augustus starts calling her beautiful.[30] Over the chapters that follow he isolates her, feeding her resentment of Lucy's popularity and turning her against Tess.[31][32] When he tries to kiss her, she pushes him away, still unable to let go of Mike.[33] Everything collapses at the carnival in Love My Way. Daisy guilt-trips an apologetic Mike into a couples-only date,[34] then trash-talks Sandy and forces a kiss on him. His answer is "You.. disgust me."[35] Augustus then corners her against a tree, and her first thought is that she deserves it.[36] Abbey intervenes, and Augustus tears him down over his abusive father. In the end it is Daisy who slaps Augustus and sends him away with a cold "Just go."[37] She closes the night resolving "Maybe it's silly to pretend at all!"[38] The year ends on the mend, with a sincere reconciliation in Moving On and that spot in Honors II.[39][2]

Sophomore year

Daisy skips the group's Acapulco trip that summer to stay home with Abbey,[40] and New Beginnings makes them a couple. His painstakingly logical confession infuriates her, so she demands he be a little selfish for once and kisses him herself.[41] The relationship carries her through a busy year. She wins the student-council secretary race over Sue in Feline Filibuster, then hands the seat straight to Abbey, who had planned it that way from the start.[42] She holds him as he breaks down at his mother's grave in At Loose Ends.[43] And Safe Boundaries is her chapter from cover to cover. She decides the two of them should "take precautions, just in case", and grills a panicking Paulo about his own experience over lunch. By the end of the day, she admits she feels too young for all of it after all.[9][44]

Lucy's disappearance in Breaking Up knocks the group sideways. Daisy ends that chapter crying against Abbey outside Lucy's empty house,[45] then throws a study party in Study Buddy to lift everyone's spirits.[11] The grief resurfaces badly at Rachel's birthday party in Happy Hour. Drunk, she hugs a melting-down Mike from behind and declares that "Lucy was NOT NICE! I shoulda stood up to her long ago!" Then she demands to know what made Lucy better than her. Abbey hears every word.[46][6]

The fallout lands in Take Heart. Abbey asks what he means to her, and the best she can offer is "I like you very much". He ends the relationship with a single "Exactly."[7] Paulo consoles her through the ice cream, and the two agree to look out for each other.[47] She and Abbey are back together by the end of Scenic Route,[48] and she sees the year out keeping a tearful vigil at an injured Paulo's bedside in Total Recall.[49]

Junior year

Junior year opens with Guest of Honor and a secret. Daisy has been hiding her nerdy side from Abbey, so she recruits Paulo to escort her to a convention instead. She cosplays as her heroine Claret and lets Paulo chase off some hecklers.[50] At the bus stop afterwards, she quietly admits it wasn't Abbey who took her out that day.[51] She comes home to find a Claret keychain her favorite author slipped into her signed book.[52]

The convention's fallout arrives in Golden Hour. Paulo's cruelty about Abbey boils over during their late-night phone calls. Caught in the middle, Daisy slaps Abbey at Burger-Tron,[53] but her real verdict lands on Paulo: "You're terrible.… I really looked up to you, you know?"[54] The autumn keeps hitting her, too. Sandy visits in Model Girlfriend and barely remembers her old friend, leaving Daisy sobbing over her own looks.[16][55]

Her sixteenth-birthday week in Love Again goes even worse. Paulo publicly snubs her invitation,[56] and when the lunch table learns that Abbey once choked him, Daisy's sympathy for Paulo pushes Abbey over the edge. He calls it off then and there, shouting "You can HAVE him, then!! We're DONE!!"[57] She repairs the Paulo half of the mess herself at his locker in Unspoken Rule.[5] Her birthday cookout in Moments Apart ends with the two of them stumbling through mutual almost-confessions under a tree.[58][59]

Winter belongs to Mike, one way or another. On Halloween in Witch Hunt he explodes at her, screaming that Sandy "has no time for meaningless little acquaintances" and that Daisy needs to get over it.[60] It is Paulo who consoles her afterwards, telling her "You deserve to be remembered."[61] The old dynamic then flips completely in Double Down. Daisy talks Mike through a guilt spiral in the library, admitting she could never quite get over him but that her feelings have since changed,[62] and urging him to do something for himself for once.[63] He kisses her cheek out of spite at Sandy, and she lunges into a real kiss. Afterwards she files the whole thing away with a breezy "Your secret's safe with me."[64]

Track Meet hands her a discovery of her own. Watching the runners with Paulo, she blurts out that girls can be cute too,[65] and works out that when she flipped the question around, the only person she could picture was Sandy.[66] Paulo, meanwhile, is on her mind more and more, and Good Enough ends with her crying into her pillow over the long list of people he has loved before her.[67]

Rain Check finally settles things. Lucy pries the truth out of her at Burger-Tron: "But I love him!! ... I love him so much I can't even look at him anymore."[68][69] Paulo overhears everything and chases her into the rain. "It's really not that hard falling in love with your best friend," he tells her, and asks to be her boyfriend.[70] He worries about dragging her down, but she has the answer ready. "And if you did I'd be happy, because I'd be with you."[71]

The new couple try keeping it secret through Review Session and Third Wheel, which lasts about a day before they learn most of their friends already knew.[72] Their first proper date is a Burger-Tron double with Jordan and Tiff. It features an impatient "Are you gonna kiss me or not?!"[73] followed by an honest talk about pace, where Paulo admits his past relationships moved faster than he wanted and Daisy agrees to take this one slow.[74] The most recent chapters find her nursing a cold while Paulo delivers homework, movie tickets, and a kiss.[75] She's also the one coaxing a withdrawn Lucy back to the lunch table.[76]

Daisy and Paulo go back to childhood games of hero and damsel,[77] and to at least one genuine wound: in elementary school she blurted to their whole class that Paulo didn't have a mom.[78] Their health-class doll Alegria made them pretend co-parents in middle school, a fact she was still happily bringing up years later.[79] The friendship deepens once high school knocks them both around a bit. Paulo nurses her through her first breakup,[47] and she tells him she believes in him when his lack of plans panics him at the riverbank.[4] After Total Recall, she keeps vigil at his hospital bed.[49]

The road to romance is a bumpy one. Their friendship nearly dies over his treatment of Abbey in Golden Hour,[54] and in Behind Closed Doors the gaming group pressures her into trash-talking him while he secretly listens from a closet.[80] Daisy repairs it herself, promising at his locker that "I care about you SO MUCH MORE than that!"[5] From there the momentum only builds, through birthday almost-confessions,[59] his fierce defense of her on Halloween,[61] and her lovesick misery in Good Enough,[67] until Rain Check makes them official. As a couple they know they are new at this. They keep things quiet at first for Abbey's sake,[81] and agree on their first date to take the physical side slow.[74]

Abbey

Abbey enters Daisy's life by helping her up after a fall in gym class.[28] He saves her from Augustus at the carnival months later,[36] and she returns the devotion in kind. She skips the Acapulco trip to spend a summer with him,[40] and goes along to his therapy appointments.[82] When his overly careful confession finally arrives, she cuts through it and kisses him herself.[41] Through their sophomore year together she is his anchor, holding him at his mother Charlotte's grave when the grief finally lands.[43]

The relationship breaks twice. The first split comes after Abbey watches her drunkenly beg Mike for answers at Rachel's party.[7] They reconcile, but her instinct to defend Paulo finishes them for good during her birthday week.[57] Some warmth survives all the same. The two share a regretful bit of closure on SAT day,[83] and when Abbey offers Paulo a peace-offering book in Third Wheel, Daisy is left quietly guilty about the relationship he doesn't yet know about.[81]

Mike is the crush that defined Daisy's early years. She debuts sniffing his workbook,[20] and spends middle school squabbling with Yashy for his attention.[21] The news of Sandy hits her hard,[27] and it all bottoms out with the forced kiss at the carnival.[35] The two patch things up sincerely in Moving On,[39] though the feelings take years longer to fade. They were still alive enough to end her first relationship with Abbey.[6]

Mike hurts her twice more, once with his Halloween outburst about Sandy and her "meaningless little acquaintances",[60] and once in a way she chooses not to call hurt at all. In Double Down she is the steady one for a change, coaching him through his guilt and assuring him her feelings have changed.[62] His spite-kiss on her cheek becomes a real kiss on the lips. Afterwards, she plays the whole thing off as a favor between friends.[64]

Augustus

What happened between Daisy and Augustus was not a romance. He introduced himself at the pool by calling a lonely fourteen-year-old beautiful.[30] Over the following chapters he cut her off from her friends, stoking her resentment of Lucy and Tess[31][32] and steering her toward the carnival disaster with Mike. When he cornered her against a tree that night, her first thought was that she deserved it.[36] Abbey stopped him, and Daisy ended it herself, slapping Augustus and dismissing him with "Just go."[37]

Her feelings about him since have stayed complicated. At Lucy's sleepover in Pillow Talk, she admitted she liked being the one girl he paid attention to. "And I liked that, okay? Sue me."[10] In nearly the same breath she insisted "maybe he's more than just that.."[84] When he found her alone in the gym storage room to apologize, she held her ground and told him to seek help elsewhere.[85] As of Line in the Sand, she still won't have him at her lunch table.[86]

Daisy and Lucy have shared classrooms since elementary school without ever quite being friends. For years Daisy envied both Lucy's looks and her closeness with Mike,[22][31] and the resentment came pouring out, drunk, at Rachel's party.[46] The odd part is that Daisy defends her just as fiercely, telling Mike that maybe Lucy's distance isn't about him at all.[87]

Junior year turns the old rivalry into something like sisterhood. Lucy comes back to school with a birthday gift for her.[88] Later she becomes the confidante who drags Daisy's feelings for Paulo into the open at Burger-Tron,[68] pushing her to actually say something. "But at least I knew! He answered! You're just guessing!"[89] These days Daisy is the one inviting a withdrawn Lucy to study sessions and lunch tables.[76]

Minor relationships

Sandy

Sandy was Daisy's best friend in their preschool and elementary days, before drifting away toward Mike.[90] Their reunion in Model Girlfriend goes badly, with Sandy barely remembering her at all.[16] Track Meet later casts the whole history in a new light, when Daisy admits the person she pictured was Sandy herself — "I wanted her for myself. Not like that! But not totally not like that.."[66]

Tess

Tess and Daisy are the comic's great tutoring odd couple, a partnership that peaked with Daisy throttling her after midterms.[29] Augustus fed Daisy's early resentment of the older girl,[32] and she aired it publicly at a pep rally,[91] but the two grew genuinely fond of each other over time. By graduation day, Daisy was the one pushing Tess toward her departing senior friends.[92]

David

David has been Daisy's comic sparring partner since their first high school homeroom.[93] He cast her as the damsel in their childhood hero games,[77] and greeted her second breakup with Abbey with a cheerful "Worst ship SUNK!"[57] More recently, he tagged along, uninvited, on what she'd meant to be a movie date with Paulo.[94]

Jessica and Rachel

The older girls' clique dropped Daisy hard in freshman year, when Katie declared her out of their league.[95] The friendship rebuilt itself properly afterwards. There was a picnic reconciliation in New Beginnings,[96] comfort at the Pillow Talk sleepover,[97] and a group hug at her sixteenth-birthday cookout.[98]
