A Better You is a Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic from 2021 in which Daisy’s future self pays Roseville High School a visit, wisdom in tow. Her friends take every word of it to heart, and somehow that makes everything worse for Daisy.
Partial synopsis
Daisy tries to keep a library study group focused on a research essay about beluga whales. Paulo asked for her help himself, but he and David spend the session cracking up while Paulo improvises his own beluga song.[1] Mike plays the model student, much to Daisy’s delight. As she talks about how beautiful belugas are, a hand lands on her shoulder.[2]
The hand belongs to an older Daisy, who explains that belugas were once called sea canaries for their song before mentioning that they’re “long-extinct in my timeline.” The table is dumbfounded. David, for one, wants to know when Daisy got so cool.[3]
Paulo is the first to beg for a peek at his future. For the good of the timeline, Future Daisy solemnly tells him not to turn off the fryer when he closes at work tomorrow.[4] She also warns him never to eat a green apple on a Wednesday.[5] Mike nervously asks which colleges he should apply to and is told, flatly, “You need to date Katie.” He starts to protest that he is already with someone, but Future Daisy stares him down and orders him to do it.[5]
Present-day Daisy is not impressed. She demands to know why all her friends are listening to this woman, and Lucy points out that the woman is “You.” Daisy trudges away alone, grumbling that all she wanted was to study beluga whales.[6] But she isn’t done with her double yet. For all anyone actually knows, this could be some weirdo merely pretending to be her, and Daisy intends to find out who she’s dealing with...
Character dynamics
- Daisy and Future Daisy: David calls Future Daisy cool as soon as she arrives.[3] Present-day Daisy protests that everyone is listening to the newcomer, then walks away from the group.[6]
Trivia & observations
- As Daisy walks away, an unidentified voice off-panel agrees to put all their money on “Bit Coin”, spelled as two words.[6]
- The comic went up the same day Veronica and Oliver launched their remastered archive, with the newspost billing it as “the latest member-only comic!” alongside 27 redone chapters.[7]
Related chapters
- Eternal Flame: Future Daisy gives the order while Mike is still with Sandy. Published three months earlier, Eternal Flame features a 4 a.m. phone call in which Sandy confesses to cheating, followed by their shaky reconciliation that morning.
- Small Fry: Future Daisy’s fryer instruction refers to Paulo’s job at Burger-Tron. Small Fry follows his first shift there, where he insists that he deserves the employee discount.
- Puppy Love: Katie pursuing Mike is nothing new. Back in middle school she leapt onto his back over a love letter, certain he would pick her.
