Another Intervention is a non-canon Bittersweet Club International-exclusive what-if that rewinds to the snowy night of Lucy’s suicide attempt on the old furniture place roof and changes a single thing: Augustus is already up there, standing on the edge.
Partial synopsis
Barefoot on the snowy roof, Lucy cries. She thinks she will push everyone away, that nobody cares about her, and that everything would be better if she just...[1] As she walks toward the edge, she stops when she sees Augustus already standing on it, looking down.[2]
After taking a slow breath, Augustus starts to step off the ledge. Lucy grabs him around the waist and hauls him backward into the snow.[3] When he recognizes her, she slaps him across the face.[4]
After Lucy demands to know why he is there, Augustus says he will be held back a year at school if he misses two more days. He adds that Toby will make sure it happens.[5] Lucy tells him she is leaving in the morning and asks him, “Who’s gonna stop you next time?!”[6]
But Lucy didn’t pull him off a ledge just to hand him back to it at sunrise. She has an idea, one night to make it work, and no intention of taking no for an answer...
Character dynamics
- Lucy and Augustus: In Ten Seconds to Midnight, Augustus pulls Lucy back from this ledge on New Year’s Eve.[7] Here, Lucy hauls Augustus into the snow and slaps him after he recognizes her.[4]
Trivia & observations
- Augustus says “Toby’s gonna make sure of it”[5] In canon, Trapped shows Toby using Augustus’s secret to blackmail him,[8] and the main comic later reveals that Augustus was held back a year.[9]
Related chapters
- Love Again: Its flashback shows the canon version of this night. Lucy is alone on the roof when she jumps, and Augustus arrives afterward and calls an ambulance.
- Ten Seconds to Midnight: The pair’s first night on this same rooftop. On New Year’s Eve it’s Augustus who catches Lucy at the ledge and pulls her back, while she furiously insists she wasn’t going to jump.
- Trapped: The story of how Augustus fell in with Alejandro’s gang and how Toby learned a secret he could use against him. Augustus is trying to escape that life when Lucy finds him on the roof.
