Another Boyfriend is a Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic set a few years in the future, where Lucy kisses Paulo goodbye at his restaurant job and heads straight off to find Mike. Whatever could the two of them be up to behind Paulo’s back?

Partial synopsis

Adult Paulo flirts with customers while waiting tables at a restaurant, delivering plates with a cheery “Order’s up for the three lovely ladies~” and fetching extra parmesan with a smile. Lucy soon drops in.[1] The two duck out back for a kiss beside the bins. Paulo is working a double-shift that night, so Lucy says she will head home. Once the door slams behind him, she glances aside, smirks, and walks off down the sidewalk.[2]

Lucy next goes to Ivyshire University, where Mike is struggling to stay awake while studying for finals. She hugs him from behind, calls him a nerd, praises his hard work, and helps him study.[3] By nightfall, Mike feels ready for his exams, and they leave hand in hand. He carries an unexplained box. After Lucy confirms that Paulo is working a double-shift, Mike says it might give them “some alone time”.[4]

Of course, their little secret is only safe as long as Paulo actually stays put at the restaurant...

Trivia & observations

Lucy and Paulo kiss beside a brick wall, with three hearts floating above them.
One quick kiss before the double-shift.
  • Oliver has said the idea “just kinda came to Vero as she was reading through” story suggestions readers had sent to the authors’ Tumblr.[5]
  • Ivyshire was already an established name in Dinner Time, where Lucy taunts Jordan that Sam “got into Ivyshire” while Jordan is headed to community college. This comic is the only place the university itself appears on panel.[3][6]
  • Asked in 2017 whether BCI characterizations were canon within their respective timelines, Veronica answered “Kind of!” She attributed the differences among them to “different decisions made” and said the more serious storylines remain “relatively loyal to how a character would feel/act”. Although she named some comics “just plain canonical”, Another Boyfriend was not among them.[7]
  • A few months after release, Oliver remarked that BCI “got a lot of signups thanks to the ‘Another Boyfriend’ comic, so maybe ship baiting is the right idea!!!”[8]

  • Small Fry: Paulo starts working at Burger-Tron around his sixteenth birthday.[9][10] In this future, he still works in food service, now waiting tables and taking double-shifts for tips.[1][2] Later in the chapter, he tells Rachel that “everything still comes back to Lucy”.[11]
