Family Comix is a three-page Bittersweet Club International-exclusive set of gag strips, released to members in July 2013 as part of a small bundle of family-themed comics. The cast’s parents and siblings get a rare turn in the spotlight, and Lucy would like everyone to stop asking about hers, thank you very much.
Partial synopsis
Someone asks Jordan whether he is Lucy’s baby brother, much to Lucy’s amusement. Jordan, wearing his basketball jersey, insists that the answer should be obvious. Lucy replies that he looks like a child and is the shortest player on the team. He answers with a bashful “I’ll.. I’ll still grow.” Lucy bluntly reminds him of his age.[1]
After seeing a commercial featuring Lucy’s father, a famous race car driver, David peppers her with questions. He asks whether her father drives her to school and whether David can meet him. Lucy only glares while he clasps his hands and asks “Can he drive ME?”[1]
Lucy’s family only gets things started. The remaining strips visit Daisy’s, Paulo’s and Sue’s families in turn, at home and out at their parents’ jobs, and the grown-ups fare no better than Jordan did...
Trivia & observations
- This strip contains the series’ only explicit statement of Jordan’s age.[1]
- For all his fame, Lucy’s dad never shows his face here.[1] The racer first turned up on the family TV in Dinner Time,[2] and the man himself, Harvey, doesn’t appear in person until Love Again.[3]
- Veronica later identified Sue’s mom in response to a reader’s question about the comic.[4]
Related chapters
- Dinner Time: The main comic follows the same household through a family dinner. Jordan keeps a toy basketball hoop in his room,[5] and the television shows Lucy’s father coming through a race’s qualifiers in a sponsor-covered jacket.[2] The chapter also began as a BCI exclusive.
- Total Recall: Lucy is not the only one who has noticed Jordan’s height. At prom, Paulo greets him with “CHRIST yer short for a basketball player,” and Jordan reacts in shock.[6]
