Mostly Harmless is a non-canon Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic starring three hypothetical kittens, the next generation of the main comic’s ships. Their plan for the day is simple enough: head into the forest and catch some bugs. Simple for two of them, anyway.
Partial synopsis
PauloxLucy kitten charges into the forest with a net over his shoulder and hollers “BUG-CATCHIN’!!”.[1] Porsche greets him with a jab about how his screaming probably scared off the butterflies. He wants to catch a wasp instead. When she warns that he will get stung, he boasts that his daddy was stung once and did not care.[2] AugustusxDaisy kitten arrives last, carrying a “BUGS LIFE info book”. He admits that he thought they were only going to read about bugs, prompting the other two to protest together.[2]
Porsche soon hangs upside down from a tree branch and startles PauloxLucy kitten with a butterfly. After she mocks his shriek, he calls AugustusxDaisy kitten “a dumb girly nerd”.[3] AugustusxDaisy kitten keeps reading as butterflies and other bugs land on him. When the others demand a reaction, he says none of those species are poisonous, so he has no reason to be scared.[4]
The forest holds bigger residents than butterflies, though. PauloxLucy kitten figures a cool dude like him has nothing to worry about out here, and the day is about to test that theory...
Trivia & observations
- Oliver counts this among his favorite BCI comics, calling it “just plain cute” and saying it “does a lot to define some characters we’d never seen before”. Veronica also named it among the BCI chapters she had the most fun making.[5]
- Augustus and Daisy’s son answers the boast about the wasp with breed pedantry: “Well, he’s a longhair. Maybe it didn’t go all the way.” The father in question is Paulo, who declares himself “a friggin’ Somali, man!” in Show and Tell. Somalis are a long-haired breed, so the kid has a point.[2][6]
- PauloxLucy kitten is not the only character to shriek “YEEK!!”. Lucy uses the same yelp in the main comic.[3][7]
Related chapters
- Off to the Movies: The kitten brags that “Daddy got stung! He didn’t care!” Paulo tells the story rather differently here, admitting that a wasp sting left “Li’l Paulo” with nightmares for a week. Paulo told his son the improved version.[2][9]
- Accidents Will Happen: Another BCI what-if built around a hypothetical child of Augustus and Daisy. Veronica named the two stories together among the BCI comics she enjoyed making most.[5]
- Fork in the Road 2: Porsche is the only one of the three kids to turn up in other BCI stories. In this what-if she is Mike and Sandy’s daughter, and she appears alongside Mike in Grave Concern as well.[10][11]
