Baby Blues is a Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic that winds the clock back to the cast’s grade-school days, where little Daisy discovers that babies grow inside people and nobody will tell her how they get there. Mike should have kept his straw to himself.

Partial synopsis

School lets out, and Daisy runs off before stopping at the sight of a visibly pregnant cat waiting outside with her son, Jamie.[1] Daisy walks up, pokes the woman’s stomach and demands to know what it is. The woman explains that a baby is growing inside her and will soon come out and grow up like Daisy. Daisy wants to know how it got there, so she leans toward the belly and yells “HOW’D IT GET IN THERE”.[2]

At the snack table, Daisy tells Mike that she cannot stop thinking about the lady with the baby in her belly because nobody will tell her how it happened. Mike suggests asking one of the big kids. When Daisy tries a sip from his juice box, she discovers that it contains warm strawberry milk and gags. Mike says it is nice and gets a “Freak!” from Lucy.[3]

Later, Daisy asks two older boys how a baby gets into someone’s belly. They grin at each other and tell her that babies come from sharing spit. They warn her never to kiss anyone because once someone’s spit gets on her lips, “IT STARTS GROWIN’”.[4]

Daisy takes the lesson completely to heart. She did, after all, just drink from Mike’s straw, and neither of them is going to take the news calmly.

Trivia & observations

Daisy leans toward the pregnant cat's belly and yells "HOW'D IT GET IN THERE" while the startled mother sweats.
Daisy takes her question straight to the source.
  • Veronica and Oliver’s launch newspost in October 2014 summed the comic up as “Mike drinks warm milk and Daisy gets pregnant and Mike gets pregnant and Lucy punches them both in the guts!”
  • Mike drinks strawberry milk again in Table for One, where his high-school self sips it from a carton at lunch.[5] In this story, he insists that his strawberry milk is nice even though it is warm.[3]
  • Jamie and his mother appear only in this story, where Jamie makes a point of denying that Daisy is his friend.[2]
  • The title plays on “baby blues”, a term for short-lived sadness after childbirth, by applying it to grade-schoolers afraid that they may become parents.

  • Flirting with Disaster: Its fifth-grade flashbacks show Mike, Lucy and Daisy together during the same broad elementary-school period.
