Another Rescue is a non-canon Bittersweet Club International-exclusive comic that asks one question about the summer vacation: what if Paulo had fallen off the bridge? It replays the bridge collapse from Search and Rescue with the roles flipped, and this time it’s Lucy watching from the edge.
Partial synopsis
Back on the stone bridge, Paulo and David are roughhousing again. David hits the stones with a “KAPOW!!” and a jagged crack spreads toward Mike’s and Lucy’s feet.[1] Paulo shoves both of them clear of the crack.[2] When Lucy spins around to chew him out, Paulo is already in mid-air above the broken bridge, falling from view.[3]
Lucy comes to in Mike’s arms beside the lake while the others search the woods for Paulo.[4] Zachary warns that if water bothers her, she may want to look away, then adds, “Though I can’t guarantee he’ll be in one piece..” Tess, already in tears, screams at him.[5]
Sue bluntly points out that Paulo put them in that situation in the first place. Lucy answers through her tears with “He always tries to fix things when he can!” A flashback shows him pulling her and Mike out of the river.[6]
The search goes on without her, and all Lucy can do is wait for whatever the others bring back out of those woods...
Character dynamics
- Lucy and Paulo: Paulo had already pulled Lucy and Mike from the river in Troubled Waters.[7] When the bridge cracks here, he shoves them clear and falls over the edge himself.[2][3] At the lakeside, Lucy defends him through tears when Sue blames him for the accident.[6]
- Paulo and Tess: Tess begins by scolding Paulo and David for roughhousing.[1] She later returns from the search in tears,[4] then screams at Zachary when he says he cannot guarantee Paulo will be in one piece.[5]
Trivia & observations
- Another Rescue belongs to a group of “Another ...”-titled what-if comics that includes Another Choice and Another Way. Veronica and Oliver describe these stories in newsposts as AU comics based on critical points in the old story.
- Zachary knows that Lucy is afraid of water because she told him “Water scares me.” in Arrival, during the same vacation.[5][8]
- Sue is present during the original river rescue and appears again in Lucy’s flashback to it.[6][7]
Related chapters
- Search and Rescue: Paulo and David’s horseplay begins with the same “KAPOW!!” that opens the bridge scene here.[9][1] In canon, the cracked bridge gives way beneath Mike and Lucy.[10] Mike then falls into the river after getting Lucy clear.[11]
- Troubled Waters: Lucy’s flashback comes straight from this chapter, in which a younger Paulo hauled her and Mike out of the river.[7] The same near-drowning is where her fear of water began.
